Grant writing is extremely similar to ‘garment shopping’ for a special event. To be successful in the quest of resources, one must have knowledge of the ‘want’ before you choose the ‘store.’ One would not go to ‘Best Buy’ for clothes or vice versa. This presentation will escort the grant writer, as the ‘shopper,’ through important actions in preparation for the event. “One must have the right garment and fit to wear to the successful function!” View Objectives

Benner's work with the Carnegie Foundation addresses the future of nursing through a process of clinical reasoning at all levels. The presenter took clinically derived scenarios and using concepts from Benner's "Educating Nurses-A Call for Radical Transformation" developed a combination of critical thinking exercises, and an interactive application case study that helped move students to think critically and clinically, just as a nurse does in professional practice.

The decision to dismiss a student is never an easy one, especially when that dismissal is based on student performance in a clinical practice-oriented setting, where there exists a certain degree of instructor subjectivity. Thus, students may challenge academic dismissal through grievance procedures and the courts. When public safety is at issue, clinical faculty have the responsibility to dismiss students based on clinical performance. Precedent-setting cases are discussed where the courts uphold higher education faculties’ and grievance committees’ decisions when due process and rights are protected. Suggestions will be given for assurance of student and faculty rights, proper due process/grievance procedure, and documentation. View Objectives

This program reviews driving factors behind the push to implement health information technology and the implications that a technology-rich healthcare delivery system hold for the preparation of today's nursing workforce. One essential skill set required of every nurse providing patient care today is the ability to document patient assessments and interventions in electronic health records, yet few opportunities exist for the nursing student to learn and practice this skill. The application of simulation and virtual hospitals and charting systems in the educational setting are discussed as a means to teach critical skill sets. View Objectives

The final semester before graduation poses unique challenges for faculty, students and clinical agency staff, including fostering students' ability to achieve a satisfactory level of beginning professional practice. Feedback from agency staff and students revealed that the final clinical experience was not meeting expectations or needs. These rotations typically included students with varying levels of preparation, clinical times, and objectives. Over the semester, as faculty and agency personnel collaborated to address these issues, a model (the Mutually Beneficial Model), emerged that allowed faculty and agency staff to address these issues from an educational and service perspective. With national initiatives toward quality and safety in healthcare and nurse-sensitive outcomes driving the nursing work force, today's nurse looks different than a nurse from a decade ago. Evidence-based practice, patient-centered care, and informatics are just a few of the elements with which we, as educators, need to equip our students. This teaching paradigm looks different than traditional models. Presented in this webinar are methods found beneficial in the lab setting for helping create the new nurse and evaluation methods for use in identifying learning beyond the skill. View Objectives

Utilizing technology requires the ability to manage data on the go. Nurses need to be able to quickly make evidence-based decisions efficiently. Including handheld technology in the nursing curriculum can assist students in mastering these concepts. Will your students be comfortable with mobile knowledge management? Will your students understand how to track the changes in client status correctly with an iTouch, Smartphone, or Netbook? This webinar explores several strategies to help faculty meet these important goals. This webinar was completely sponsored by Skyscape, Inc. No CEs/Contact Hours are offered for this event. This webinar expands the discussion of the earlier Teaching IOM for the Nursing Classroom: Integrating the Healthcare Core Competencies webinar. As has been noted in Dr. Benner's report, Educating Nurses (2010), classroom learning experiences and simulation and clinical learning experiences must be connected. The Institute of Medicine five core competencies are examined from the perspective of simulation and clinical learning and with emphasis placed on integration with classroom learning experiences. The discussion focuses on strategies that address the IOM core competencies: (1) provide patient-centered care, (2) work in interdisciplinary teams, (3) employ evidence-based practice, (4) apply quality improvement, and (5) utilize informatics. There is increasing information to support the need for improving nursing education. The Institute of Medicine reports on quality care emphasize the incorporation of five healthcare core competencies for all healthcare professions. The new report led by Dr. Patricia Benner, Educating Nurses (2010), calls for major change, a radical transformation. This webinar examines the IOM core competencies and discusses strategies to integrate these competencies and facilitate effective learning in the classroom. The core competencies include: (1) provide patient-centered care, (2) work in interdisciplinary teams, (3) employ evidence-based practice, (4) apply quality improvement, and (5) utilize informatics.
